Renewable Energy

Offshore Wind Hub

Greater Grimsby is emerging as a key player in the renewable energy revolution with potential to become the UK capital of the offshore wind industry.

Greater Grimsby offers:

  • direct access to the world’s biggest offshore wind farms
  • the UK’s largest port capable of handling major projects
  • leadership in wind power, marine renewables and bioenergy
  • proven expertise in engineering and construction

Grimsby is just 10-50 miles from existing and planned wind farms off the Lincolnshire coast in the North Sea, where up to 4,000 more turbines are planned. This proximity has led to significant interest from operations and maintenance (O&M) providers, major manufacturers and component suppliers. Two of the largest players in offshore wind, Centrica and Siemens, have chosen to base their O&M teams in Grimsby.

Humberside Airport has daily flights to key offshore centres such as Oslo and Aberdeen. It is also the second largest in the UK for North Sea oil and gas helicopter operations.

Green Power Stations

ConocoPhillips operates the Immingham Combined Heat and Power plant, one of the greenest power stations in the world generating 730 MW of electricity. It produces electricity and creates steam, which is used by the nearby Humber and Lindsey refineries. The plant, together with the Humber refinery, is part of an ultra-low-carbon integrated energy hub.

Bioenergy Projects

Proximity to the UK’s largest port complex, Europe’s food town and the agricultural hinterland of Lincolnshire, makes the area extremely attractive for green energy facilities. Companies involved in bioenergy and biomass projects in the area include Greenergy; Total; Vireol; Abengoa Bioenergy; Helius/RWE Innogy; Siemens and Encycle.

Wave and Tidal

With its location on the banks of the UK’s busiest trading estuary, Greater Grimsby is a natural location for marine renewables that are being developed to harness wave and tidal power. The Humber Tidal Power Consortium that is backing the project brings together several major renewable energy companies.

So, if you’re looking for the optimum location for:

  • operations & maintenance functions
  • wind turbine and blade manufacturers
  • component suppliers
  • research & development

Greater Grimsby is the natural choice.
